News Release: New York Credit Union Foundation Launches Pilot Program In Collaboration with New York Credit Unions
The three components of the brass Student Program:
brass|Magazine
brass|MAGAZINE is about real life and money—a lifestyle magazine with a money twist. Produced for young adults, about young adults and by young adults, brass sees young people “eye-to-eye” and shows them how to make, manage and multiply money. Entertaining, informative and motivating, brass|MAGAZINE writes about the events in a young adult’s life which creates relevant content for classroom discussions and activities.
brass|teacher resource center
brass|TEACHER RESOURCE CENTER provides online classroom materials that directly correlate with the content in brass|MAGAZINE. This interactive resource provides lesson plans, questioning strategies and suggestions for integrating other programs such as NEFE and LifeSmarts.

Dear Principal:
“Tight!” “Cool!” “Sweet!” “Sick!” Whatever terms are used by today’s young generation, they all mean the same thing… “We like it!”
What they like is brass|MAGAZINE—the money magazine for young adults, about young adults, by young adults.
brass|MAGAZINE is also “liked” by educators because the magazine provides relevant and intelligent content about what young adults are currently doing and how money can impact them. Now brass|MEDIA Inc. is augmenting the reasons for students and teachers to “like” the magazine even more: the brass|STUDENT PROGRAM!
This “free-to-schools” initiative is a collaborative effort between brass|MEDIA, sponsoring New York state credit unions, the New York Credit Union Foundation, the New York State Education Department and the New York State Business Teachers’ Association. The purpose of the brass|STUDENT PROGRAM is to assist junior and senior high school students in their quest for understanding the importance of money and how it influences their lives.
This two-year pilot program consists of three separate, but integrated components:
- brass|MAGAZINE - content for classroom instruction
- brass|TEACHER RESOURCE CENTER –online instructional resources
- CREDIT UNIONS for COLLEGE – a searchable scholarship database
In May, you will receive sample copies of brass|MAGAZINE for your review. In August 2006, your school will be given classroom sets of the magazine. Anticipate delivery about the middle of the month in August, November and February. Since students will be off for summer, the May issues will be available online. Each public high school in the state will receive classroom sets equal to ten percent of their junior and senior enrollment. (If you have 500 juniors and seniors in your school, you will receive 50 copies.)
Let us know if you would like us to send the magazines to a contact person other than you. Just go online to www.brasscu.com/studentprogram/teacher/ and click the REGISTER link to enter new contact information. This person would then receive the magazines and be asked to share them with your teachers. If you do not wish to receive brass|MAGAZINE, please notify us as we will transfer your copies to another school. We have hundreds of teachers already requesting copies and there will be a limited supply.
brass is all about young adults. We welcome your students’ ideas and encourage them to write articles (see www.brasscu.com – “Writers Wanted”). We look forward to working in partnership with you, your students, teachers and community.
Respectfully,
Marla McVay
