NY CUs at Forefront of Financial Education Receive Desjardins Awards

(October 27 - Albany, NY) – The New York Credit Union Foundation recently awarded four first place and two honorable mention Desjardins Youth Financial Education Awards to the following recipients:

1st Place  
  - Cooperative Federal CU, less than $35 million in assets
  - Sidney FCU, $75-$250 million in assets
  - Capital Communications FCU, over $250 million in assets
  - Teachers FCU, over $1 billion in assets
   
Honorable Mention  
  - The Summit FCU, over $250 million in assets
  - Visions FCU, over $1 billion in assets

The Desjardins awards are given to credit unions that demonstrate a significant commitment to youth financial education.

These credit unions show their commitment by encouraging and supporting classroom education, sponsoring in-school branching and conducting youth programs at their credit unions and throughout their communities.

“Today’s economic situation certainly underscores the importance of improving the financial literacy of New Yorkers,” said Diane LaVigna-Wixted, executive director, New York Credit Union Foundation. “After seeing all the great projects credit unions submitted for the award it was obvious that our credit unions recognize the importance of that as well.”

Receiving 2008 Desjardins Youth Financial Education Awards on behalf of their credit unions were (l-r): Sharon Phillips, Capital Communications FCU; Laurie Baker, The Summit FCU; Thom Dellwo, Cooperative Federal CU; James Suriano, Sidney FCU; Ron Ehrenreich, Cooperative Federal CU; and Robert Allen, Teachers FCU.
